Nimba County
Located in northeastern Liberia, bordering Côte d’Ivoire to the east and Guinea to the northwest. The county seat is Sanniquellie, while Ganta is its largest and most populous city. Covering an area of approximately 11,551 square miles (29,920 km²), Nimba is the largest of Liberia’s fifteen counties. Administratively, it comprises six statutory districts. According to the 2022 Census, the county’s population stands at 621,841, making it the second most populous county in Liberia.
The county takes its name from Mount Nimba—known locally as Neinbaa Tohn in the Mahn (Mano) language—which forms part of the natural boundary between Guinea and Côte d’Ivoire. Nimba is bordered by Bong and Grand Bassa counties to the west, Rivercess to the southwest, and Grand Gedeh to the southeast, with its northern and northeastern edges extending along the borders with Guinea and Côte d’Ivoire.
